Lubane Savings & Co-operative Society Limited is a Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization (SACCO) that was established and started by employees of the then Swaziland Electricity Board, in 1977. Its main business is to mobilise members for the SACCO, collect savings there from, judiciously invest such members’ savings and at the end of each year, pay dividends to members as a return for their investment. Out of these investment returns and members savings, the SACCO lends to members at affordable interest rates and also finance the day-to-day expenses of its Secretariat.
Whilst the membership of the SACCO was for a long time restricted to employees of the Electricity Board, it was decided in 2010, that it should be opened to all other in order to grow the SACCO and ultimately be able to pay a better return to its members.
The industry in which Lubane operates is regulated by Financial Services Regulatory Authority and the Co-operative unit of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade. Relevant legislation includes the Co-operative Societies Act of 2003, Co-operative Societies Regulations of 2005, the Financial Services Regulatory Authority Act of 2010, Guidelines for Savings and Credit Co-operatives issued under the FSRA Act of 2010, the Consumer Credit Act of 2016 and National Co-operatives Development Guidelines and Directives of July 2019.
